Jeremiah 26:1 (NET) New English Translation

1 The LORD spoke to Jeremiah at the beginning of the reign of Josiah's son, King Jehoiakim of Judah.
2 The LORD said, "Go stand in the courtyard of the LORD's temple. Speak out to all the people who are coming from the towns of Judah to worship in the LORD's temple. Tell them everything I command you to tell them. Do not leave out a single word!
3 Maybe they will pay attention and each of them will stop living the evil way they do. If they do that, then I will forgo destroying them as I had intended to do because of the wicked things they have been doing.
4 Tell them that the LORD says, 'You must obey me! You must live according to the way I have instructed you in my laws.
5 You must pay attention to the exhortations of my servants the prophets. I have sent them to you over and over again. But you have not paid any attention to them.
6 If you do not obey me, then I will do to this temple what I did to Shiloh. And I will make this city an example to be used in curses by people from all the nations on the earth.'"
7 The priests, the prophets, and all the people heard Jeremiah say these things in the LORD's temple.
8 Jeremiah had just barely finished saying all the LORD had commanded him to say to all the people. All at once some of the priests, the prophets, and the people grabbed him and shouted, "You deserve to die!
9 How dare you claim the LORD's authority to prophesy such things! How dare you claim his authority to prophesy that this temple will become like Shiloh and that this city will become an uninhabited ruin!" Then all the people crowded around Jeremiah.
10 However, some of the officials of Judah heard about what was happening and they rushed up to the LORD's temple from the royal palace. They set up court at the entrance of the New Gate of the LORD's temple.
11 Then the priests and the prophets made their charges before the officials and all the people. They said, "This man should be condemned to die because he prophesied against this city. You have heard him do so with your own ears."
12 Then Jeremiah made his defense before all the officials and all the people. "The LORD sent me to prophesy everything you have heard me say against this temple and against this city.
13 But correct the way you have been living and do what is right. Obey the LORD your God. If you do, the LORD will forgo destroying you as he threatened he would.
14 As to my case, I am in your power. Do to me what you deem fair and proper.
15 But you should take careful note of this: If you put me to death, you will bring on yourselves and this city and those who live in it the guilt of murdering an innocent man. For the LORD has sent me to speak all this where you can hear it. That is the truth!"
16 Then the officials and all the people rendered their verdict to the priests and the prophets. They said, "This man should not be condemned to die. For he has spoken to us under the authority of the LORD our God."
17 Then some of the elders of Judah stepped forward and spoke to all the people gathered there. They said,
18 "Micah from Moresheth prophesied during the time Hezekiah was king of Judah. He told all the people of Judah, 'The LORD who rules over all says, "Zion will become a plowed field. Jerusalem will become a pile of rubble. The temple mount will become a mere wooded ridge."'
19 King Hezekiah and all the people of Judah did not put him to death, did they? Did not Hezekiah show reverence for the LORD and seek the LORD's favor? Did not the LORD forgo destroying them as he threatened he would? But we are on the verge of bringing great disaster on ourselves."
20 Now there was another man who prophesied as the LORD's representative against this city and this land just as Jeremiah did. His name was Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath Jearim.
21 When the king and all his bodyguards and officials heard what he was prophesying, the king sought to have him executed. But Uriah found out about it and fled to Egypt out of fear.
22 However, King Jehoiakim sent some men to Egypt, including Elnathan son of Achbor,
23 and they brought Uriah back from there. They took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him executed and had his body thrown into the burial place of the common people.
24 However, Ahikam son of Shaphan used his influence to keep Jeremiah from being handed over and executed by the people.

2 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS ; Stand H5975 VQI2MS in the court H2691 of the LORD H3068 EDS \'s house H1004 CMS , and speak H1696 unto H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS the cities H5892 of Judah H3063 , which come H935 to worship H7812 in the LORD H3068 EDS \'s house H1004 CMS , all H3605 NMS the words H1697 AMP that H834 RPRO I command H6680 VPQ1MS-2MS thee to speak H1696 unto H413 PREP-3MP them ; diminish H1639 not H408 NPAR a word H1697 :
3 If so be H194 ADV they will hearken H8085 VQY3MP , and turn H7725 W-VUY3MP every man H376 NMS from his evil H7451 D-AFS way H1870 M-CMS-3MS , that I may repent H5162 W-VNQ1MS me of H413 PREP the evil H7451 D-AFS , which H834 RPRO I H595 PPRO-1MS purpose H2803 to do H6213 L-VQFC unto them because H6440 M-CMP of the evil H7455 of their doings H4611 .
4 And thou shalt say H559 unto H413 PREP-3MP them , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS ; If H518 PART ye will not H3808 NADV hearken H8085 to H413 PREP-1MS me , to walk H1980 L-VQFC in my law H8451 , which H834 RPRO I have set H5414 VQQ1MS before H6440 you ,
5 To hearken H8085 to H5921 PREP the words H1697 CMP of my servants H5650 the prophets H5030 , whom H834 RPRO I H595 PPRO-1MS sent H7971 unto H413 you , both rising up early H7925 , and sending H7971 them , but ye have not H3808 W-NPAR hearkened H8085 ;
6 Then will I make H5414 this H2088 D-PMS house H1004 D-NMS like Shiloh H7887 , and will make H5414 VQY1MS this H2063 city H5892 D-GFS a curse H7045 to all H3605 the nations H1471 of the earth H776 D-GFS .
7 So the priests H3548 and the prophets H5030 and all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 heard H8085 W-VQY3MP Jeremiah H3414 speaking H1696 VPPMS these H428 D-DPRO-3MP words H1697 AMP in the house H1004 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
8 Now it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when Jeremiah H3414 had made an end H3615 of speaking H1696 all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS had commanded H6680 VPQ3MS him to speak H1696 unto H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the people H5971 , that the priests H3548 and the prophets H5030 and all H3605 NMS the people H5971 took H8610 him , saying H559 L-VQFC , Thou shalt surely die H4191 VQFA .
9 Why H4069 IPRO hast thou prophesied H5012 in the name H8034 of the LORD H3068 EDS , saying H559 L-VQFC , This H2088 D-PMS house H1004 D-NMS shall be H1961 VQY3MS like Shiloh H7887 , and this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 shall be desolate H2717 without H369 an inhabitant H3427 VQPMS ? And all H3605 NMS the people H5971 were gathered H6950 against H413 PREP Jeremiah H3414 in the house H1004 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
10 When the princes H8269 CMP of Judah H3063 heard H8085 W-VQY3MP these H428 D-DPRO-3MP things H1697 AMP , then they came up H5927 from the king H4428 D-NMS \'s house H1004 unto the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and sat down H3427 in the entry H6607 of the new H2319 gate H8179 of the LORD H3068 EDS \'s house .
11 Then spoke H559 W-VQY3MP the priests H3548 and the prophets H5030 unto H413 PREP the princes H8269 and to H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the people H5971 , saying H559 L-VQFC , This H2088 D-PMS man H376 LD-NMS is worthy H4941 CMS to die H4194 NMS ; for H3588 CONJ he hath prophesied H5012 against H413 PREP this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS , as H834 K-RPRO ye have heard H8085 with your ears H241 B-CFD-2MP .
12 Then spoke H559 W-VQY3MS Jeremiah H3414 unto H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the princes H8269 and to H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the people H5971 , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , The LORD H3068 EDS sent H7971 me to prophesy H5012 against H413 PREP this H2088 D-PMS house H1004 D-NMS and against H413 PREP this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS all H3605 NMS the words H1697 AMP that H834 RPRO ye have heard H8085 .
13 Therefore now H6258 W-ADV amend H3190 your ways H1870 and your doings H4611 , and obey H8085 the voice H6963 B-NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS your God H430 ; and the LORD H3068 EDS will repent H5162 him of H413 PREP the evil H7451 D-AFS that H834 RPRO he hath pronounced H1696 VPQ3MS against H5921 PREP-2MP you .
14 As for me H589 W-PPRO-1MS , behold H2009 , I am in your hand H3027 : do H6213 with me as seemeth H5869 B-CMD-2MP good H2896 and meet H3477 unto you .
15 But H389 ADV know ye for certain H3045 , that H3588 CONJ if H518 PART ye H859 PPRO-2MS put me to death H4191 , ye H859 PPRO-2MS shall surely H3588 CONJ bring H5414 innocent H5355 AMS blood H1818 NMS upon H5921 PREP-2MP yourselves , and upon H413 W-PREP this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS , and upon H413 W-PREP the inhabitants H3427 thereof : for H3588 CONJ of a truth H571 the LORD H3068 EDS hath sent H7971 me unto H5921 PREP-2MP you to speak H1696 all H3605 NMS these H428 words H1697 AMP in your ears H241 .
16 Then said H559 W-VQY3MP the princes H8269 and all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 unto H413 PREP the priests H3548 and to H413 PREP the prophets H5030 ; This H2088 D-PMS man H376 LD-NMS is not H369 NPAR worthy H4941 CMS to die H4194 NMS : for H3588 CONJ he hath spoken H1696 VPQ3MS to H413 PREP us in the name H8034 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 .
17 Then rose up H6965 certain H376 of the elders H2205 of the land H776 D-GFS , and spoke H559 W-VQY3MP to H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the assembly H6951 of the people H5971 , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
18 Micah H4320 the Morasthite H4183 prophesied H5012 in the days H3117 B-CMP of Hezekiah H2396 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 , and spoke H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the people H5971 NMS of Judah H3063 , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 ; Zion H6726 shall be plowed H2790 like a field H7704 , and Jerusalem H3389 shall become H1961 VQQ3MS heaps H5856 , and the mountain H2022 of the house H1004 D-NMS as the high places H1116 of a forest H3293 .
19 Did Hezekiah H2396 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 and all H3605 W-CMS Judah H3063 put him at all to death H4191 ? did he not H3808 I-NADV fear H3372 the LORD H3068 EDS , and besought H2470 the LORD H3068 EDS , and the LORD H3068 EDS repented H5162 W-VNY3MS him of H413 PREP the evil H7451 AFS which H834 RPRO he had pronounced H1696 VPQ3MS against H5921 PREP them ? Thus might we H587 procure H6213 great H1419 AFS evil H7451 AFS against H5921 PREP our souls H5315 .
20 And there was H1961 VQQ3MS also H1571 W-CONJ a man H376 NMS that prophesied H5012 in the name H8034 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , Urijah H223 the son H1121 of Shemaiah H8098 of Kirjath H7157 - jearim , who prophesied H5012 against H5921 PREP this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS and against H5921 PREP this H2063 D-DFS land H776 D-GFS according to all H3605 K-NMS the words H1697 CMP of Jeremiah H3414 :
21 And when Jehoiakim H3079 the king H4428 , with all H3605 W-CMS his mighty men H1368 , and all H3605 W-CMS the princes H8269 , heard H8085 his words H1697 CMP-3MS , the king H4428 D-NMS sought H1245 to put him to death H4191 : but when Urijah H223 heard H8085 it , he was afraid H3372 , and fled H1272 W-VQY3MS , and went into H935 W-VQY3MS Egypt H4714 ;
22 And Jehoiakim H3079 the king H4428 D-NMS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS men H376 NMP into Egypt H4714 , namely , Elnathan H494 the son H1121 of Achbor H5907 , and certain men H376 with H854 PREP-3MS him into H413 PREP Egypt H4714 .
23 And they fetched forth Urijah H223 out of Egypt H4714 M-TFS , and brought H935 him unto H413 PREP Jehoiakim H3079 the king H4428 D-NMS ; who slew H5221 him with the sword H2719 , and cast H7993 his dead body H5038 into H413 PREP the graves H6913 of the common H1121 people H5971 D-NMS .
24 Nevertheless H389 ADV the hand H3027 CFS of Ahikam H296 the son H1121 of Shaphan H8227 was H1961 VQQ3FS with H854 Jeremiah H3414 , that they should not H1115 L-NPAR give H5414 VQFC him into the hand H3027 of the people H5971 to put him to death H4191 .
